WISDOM FROM THE RANGERS
PRINCIPLE FIVE: NEVER QUIT,
EVEN WHEN YOU FAIL
Whatever your goal is, if it is truly challenging and worthwhile, there will be opportunities for you to abandon it and plenty of excuses to quit. Maybe some of those excuses will even be good ones. If it were easy, it wouldn’t be much of a goal, right? Because pretty much everyone would have it or do it. No one is tempted to quit when things are going well. But things will not always go well, and you won’t know what you are capable of if you give up. So whatever unpleasant or uncomfortable suck factor is in front of you—whatever pressure, stress, or temptation you’re dealing with—you’ve got to see it as a gift. It is an opportunity to see how strong you are. Endurance is the essential quality you need to cultivate in yourself, because it powers everything else.
I have made some world-class mistakes. I’ve messed up and learned from it. If you mess up, you are going to need to deal with whatever challenges your failure has just created. You have to see it as a chance to create a new goal and an opportunity to learn something and become stronger. Never quitting means you will turn your negatives into opportunities and positives. No matter how badly you have screwed up, you still have resources, or the ability to develop resources, to change direction. Your limits are wider than you think, as long as you never quit. So try to shift gears when life throws down obstacles in your path. Assume that you will encounter tough times, and consider how, not if, you are going to beat them.
Sometimes you will fail. When something goes wrong, you need to be able to rebound as though you’re on fire. Being able to recover and adapt to the unexpected is your secret weapon, and it’s as important as your technical skills. When things go wrong, some guys will sit in their little sewing circles and complain. Not you, not if you want to win. You are not going to waste your valuable time being distracted or disgusted or feeling sorry for yourself. When you feel bad, go fix whatever needs to be fixed. Even if it breaks some eggs, just go get it fixed. The Army teaches that, and RIP takes it to the next level.
But I can only tell you my story; I can’t make you take responsibility for your own life. No one can do that except you.
